Why hire a Perth Birth photographer?

Hiring a Perth Birth Photographer enables you and your birth partner to be completely involved in the birthing process. Your partner can be a better support person giving his/her 100% attention on you. actually enjoy this fleeting moment without having to fumble around trying taking photographs and ultimately missing that experience. The arrival of your long awaited baby is one of the most emotional and momentous occasions in your life. For months you’ve felt this tiny beautiful human-being hiccup, kick and move inside you and finally the day has arrived when you will meet this little person. Whether this is your first, third or last baby, nothing can compare to that moment when you meet for this first time, face to face.

Capturing precious moments, that are otherwise forgotten in the midst of adrenaline and excitement.  Words can not describe the profound impact of that arrival, the first touch, the first breath, and the first cry.  By hiring a birth photographer, you are ensuring that your husband/partner, friends and family are present in the moment and not trying to figure out camera and flash settings!

Some common questions:

Q. When should we book?

A. As soon as you’ve decided to have your birth captured, and preferably before 34 weeks so arrangements can be made for me to be on-call. Should you go into labour earlier please still contact me!

Q. Will my “private parts” be captured?

A. In short the photographs can be as graphic as you wish, crowning photographs are only taken upon request and where possible taken at an angel where no ‘parts’ are visible (like above).

Q. Will you post the photographs on the internet?

A. Nothing will posted on social media, the internet, or on display in the studio without prior consent. Your privacy is of utmost importance to me. Birth is an extremely intimate and scared experience and it is important that you have control of where those images will be shared. I never post names or any personal identifying information about any of my maternity, birth or newborn clients. Your birth images are not shared without prior written consent.

Q. When will we call you?

A. The coverage of your birth will be discussed at your prenatal meeting. Some parents like full coverage of labour, deliver, and up to 2hrs post delivery. Others only call me when they are in active labour and at 5cm, this is when I would make my way to the birth location.  Either way it is important that we keep in touch in the weeks leading up to delivery.

Q. How long will you stay?

A. As each birth is different and impossible to predict, this is a difficult question to answer. My Perth Birth Photographer package covers up to 10hrs at the birthing location. If you have an exceedingly long labour, additional hours will be charged separately.

Q. What if I have a caesarean section?

A. It is important that you discuss this possibility with your OBGYN/Midwife before your due date. In the event of not being allowed access to the operating room, rest assured that there is still ample opportunity for capturing those first few moments. I have had a caesarean with my first child so I am familiar with the process on a personal level. I have also had the pleasure of photographing a number of my clients caesareans. You will need to obtain permission (written if possible) to have your birth photographed by not only your OBGYN but also the Anaesthesiologist if your OBGYN works with a particular one and/or your hospital, prior to your birth.

Should you require an emergency caesarean and not permission is granted for me to enter the theatre I will remain in the waiting room until you are in recovery. Photographing weighing and measuring of the baby will still take place, along with first breastfed and cuddles with Dad.

Additionally by having an elective or emergency caesarean this does not grant a refund.

Q. What if you miss my birth?

A. While every arrangement is made to make myself available, given the nature of childbirth there is always a chance that I may miss the birth. As it is a very unlikely event that this would happen (and if this situation should occur), due to a situation out of my control (car accident etc). Your birth fee will be transferred onto a newborn session, and at the first opportunity I will attend your birth location to capture a “First 48” session free of charge.
Again should I miss the birth due to an extremely fast delivery ( precipitous labour) or if you have not called me or kept me update with your labour progress, your birth fee will be used for a newborn session.

Newborn sessions are held within the first 10-16 days ideally.

Q. What equipment will you use?

A. Melissa Sheed is a Perth Birth Photographer who will only use the best professional equipment. She uses the latest technology for both capturing your birth and processing your images. If your room is very dark, we may obviously wish to make some adjustments to avoid dark images. Covered in more detail during pre-natal meeting.

Q. How many photographs will I receive?

A. There are no limits to the number of photographs taken during our time together, typically families receive between 75-400 images sometimes more!

You are guaranteed 80-100 high resolution JPEG images.

Q. How will my photos be delivered?

A. On the whole your images will be a mixture of colour, and black & white. Images are professionally colour corrected and enhanced, delivered in high resolution JPEG format. Minimal retouching is done on birth story images as this is a RAW and organic experience so the images will reflect what was seen on the day through the camera.
